The Baluch connection

Love transcends boundaries. So does fashion and quite literally so. While Balenciaga’s fall 2007 collection at the Paris fashion week had Jodhpuri pants and Ikat prints thrown into the collection, fashion house Ravissant has sought inspiration from the closer home region of Baluchistan.

Their latest collection titled ‘Nawazish’, created by the in house design team headed by Akshay Deep Singh, is a combination of Indian fashion sensibilities with a dash of Baluch colours, cuts and embroideries.

Pin tucks, pleated fringes and jersey trims have been used generously in tops which have vibrant hues but in muted tones. Cotton silk has been used extensively in the tops and is predicted to be rather popular is Europe this season.

Sarees, are largely inspired from Baluch in their embellishments and embroidery styles. Summer cool fabrics such as chiffon, georgette and chanderi dominate this collection. Hand painting and unique tie and dye techniques add the quintessential style and subtlety.

The forte of Baluch garments remains their predilection for using multiple fabrics, colours and designs in a single garment. This has been used beautifully in the Sarees, each of which has an array of embroideries and colours thrown into it.

The shifli technique has also been incorporated in the kurtas and salwars in a big way. Crochet lace, gota pattis and contrasted trims have been used for adorning the garments.

Using multiple fabrics in the creation one garment doesn’t end at the sarees. The salwar kameez collection also breathes of the same technique so much so cotton brocade, Tanchoi, short silk and embroidered gota patti have been used in making a single kurta and very aesthetically so.

The collection starts at Rs 1,400 for the new line summer tops and goes upto Rs 25,000 for the sarees and salwar kameezes.
