Claiming that TC was not behind the violence there, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said that instead of appealing to her party, Bhattacharjee should tell his own party to maintain peace. ''He is responsible for the violence at Nandigram. He is now talking of peace. Instead of asking us, he should tell his partymen to maintain peace,'' Banerjee told reporters here shortly after Bhattacharjee's appeal to both TC and CPI-M for peace at Nandigram. The TC supremo said her party had shown enough patience and restraint. ''Nandigram would have been in flames had we wanted trouble there.'' TC general secretary Partha Chatterjee, referring to Sunday's and yesterday's violence, said "we really wonder how Bhattacherjee can appeal to us when he cannot control his own armed cadre who are responsible for unrest and killing of innocent villagers in Nandigram." Chatterjee said it was surprising that Bhattacharjee was making such an appeal when it was his government which had prevented the CRPF, deployed after the recapture of Nandigram by the marxists in November last year, from performing its duties. Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state Manas Bhuiyan claimed many of those who received land documents from the Chief Minister were economically sound CPI(M) supporters.
