CPI(M) calls Trinamool Congress mindless & directionless

The CPI(M) on Saturday described the Trinamool Congress as a "mindless" and "directionless" party and wondered how the opposition Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) had decided to forge an alliance with it to fight the ensuing panchayat polls in West Bengal.

"Mamata Banerjee is leading a mindless, directionless party which sans ideology. I cannot understand how SUCI has aligned with it. How is it possible," CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Left Front Chairman Biman Bose told reporters here.

In a significant political decision, the Trinamool Congress and SUCI have decided to fight the coming panchayat election in West Bengal together. Banerjee's party has floated 17-party Progressive Secular Democratic Front without the BJP or the Congress. SUCI is also not part of this front.

Asked whether such an alliance would affect the political chances of the Left Front in the panchayat polls, Bose said "the Left Front goes as a united front.

"The latest experience of Tripura has shown that unity matters and the Left Front should go to polls as a united body," he said in an apparent reference to the Forward Bloc's debacle in Tripura assembly polls. It had contested Tripura polls alone and failed to get a seat.
