Lord Rama belongs to everyone says Sheila Dikshit

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday condemned the Opposition for deriving political mileage by misusing Lord Rama?s name and said that effort was politically motivated keeping in view ensuing elections. On Wednesday, the Opposition, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) presented some documents related to a history textbook of the Delhi University, in the Assembly and alleged that an essay by the late poet and literary critic A K Ramanujan titled 'Three Hundred Ramayanas: Five Examples and Three Thoughts on Translation' (included in the book) was to raise doubts on existence of Rama, Sita and Lakhsmana and hurt the sentiments of the people of concerned religion. In a statement, Dikshit said, “The Head of Department of History, Delhi University, issued a press note, which makes it crystal clear that the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists were all out to create unpleasant situation by ransacking and mishandling the office of the University. It has been cleared that the so-called book is not devised or compiled by any individual. Professor Ramanujan in his article has illustrated and analysed the great dynamism and variety in what he described as the telling of story of Rama within India and across the world.” Dikshit further stated that the opposition has misled the House by their mischievous political motivated actions to create misunderstanding. She said, “They (opposition party) were all out to divide society as they are intolerant towards the rich and diverse culture, heritage and freedom of expression.”
