Lalu meets Sonia over possible cabinet reshuffle

New Delhi: In a sudden political development, Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal supreme Lalu Prasad Yadav met United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi today at latter's residence. Though nothing officially came out as to what transpired between the two leaders during the meeting. But, the sources said that they discussed a possible reshuffle of the Cabinet, adding that alliance with Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party was also discussed during the meeting.

However, the manner in which the Railway Minister evaded media persons waiting outside 10, Janpath has given rise to murmur in the political circle that the Minister could not secure more berths in the impending expansion, which obviously be the last one before the next Lok Sabha polls in 2009.

The Congress party has lost some political ground even among the allies following a series of defeats in many state Assembly elections and its performance in the just concluded Rajya Sabha elections was also not dominating over its UPA allies.

On the other hand, sources said that the RJD chief, who is the main negotiator between the SP and the UPA, also conveyed Mulayam Singh Yadav's message to Sonia Gandhi. However, the message is not yet out as even the SP leaders are not ready to speak up anything on the 'alliance-in-making'.

Of late, the UPA has been making every attempt to diffuse the forces including left parties that are calling themselves as the third front and SP is one of the main proponents of that alternative. But since SP's main battle-field is Uttar Pradesh, where Mayawati is the single largest rival of both Congress and SP and this factor has made the UPA and SP come closer.
