CPM welcomes FB stand not to fight poll alone
Kolkata: The Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) on Sunday welcomed Left Front constituent Forward Bloc's decision to drop its earlier plan to go alone in the forthcoming panchayat polls in West Bengal following differences with the Marxist party.
Party sources said that CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose, who is away at Coimbatore to attend the party congress, was "happy" that the Bloc had changed its mind.
Bose, who is chairman of the Left Front, had appealed to the Bloc to drop the idea to go it alone in the elections for the sake of Left Front unity.
"I am happy the Forward Bloc has changed its stand. It was necessary since we (the Left Front) want to fight unitedly in the coming panchyat poll," Bose said announcing that a meeting of the Left Front would be held here on April 5 to discuss the panchayat elections.
Justifying the party's change of stand, Forward Bloc state secretary Ashok Ghosh said that there was no pressure from the CPI(M) in this regard, nor had it got anything to do with the party's debacle in the recent Tripura Assembly elections, where all 12 party candidates forfeited their deposits.
It was decided at the party's state secretariat meeting on March 27 that to fight anti-Left forces, the party should contest the panchayat polls under the banner of the Left Front, Ghosh said. (PTI)
