KMDA to repair & renovate Bankim Setu

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) would repair and renovate the Rishi Bankim setu in Howrah for smoother movement of traffic.

The decision was taken at the board meeting held at Unnayan Bhavan in Salt lake early this month. The meeting was chaired by the state urban development minister Mr Asok Bhattacharya.
It has been decided that the damaged portion of the bridge would be replaced and the roads including those approaching the bridge upto Rabindra setu would be covered with mastic asphalt. The work would be supervised by the Traffic and Transportation wing of the KMDA. He said repair work of the bridge is long overdue, but it could not be taken up due to constrain of funds.

A senior KMDA official said the flow of traffic along the bridge has increased to majorly and it was absolutely necessary to strengthen the bridge. Mastic asphalt enables smoother movement of traffic. He said the KMDA has taken a comprehensive plan in the city and Howrah for improvement of traffic and funds will be available under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The KMDA board has also approved laboratory apparatus and equipment for the central laboratory of quality control division. The official said as KMDA is carrying out various activities which include construction of flyover and housing complexes and also water treatment plants ~ it's laboratory needs upgradation. It may be recalled that engineers of Jadavpur university have found that the construction material used for construction of a road at Baghajatin was below standard. The bridge has been closed from September last year and repairing work is yet to begin.
