Girl stabbed by eve-teaser

JHARGRAM: A 17-year-old boy was shot at and his younger sister stabbed by a teenager at Salukgeria in Jhargram, West Midnapore, on Thursday evening. The attacker, Ranjit Ghosh (18), and some of his friends are absconding. Manmatha Ghosh and his sister Lakshmi have been admitted to hospital in a critical condition. Their elder brother, Anam (22) who was also with them, fled.

The attack on the siblings was the fallout of an earlier brawl between Ranjit and Lakshmi’s two brothers. Two weeks ago, the girl told her brothers that Ranjit, their neighbour, had been teasing her. Whenever he saw her, he used to make indecent gestures and pass lewd comments at the girl.

About a week after that, Anam and Manmatha got hold of Ranjit and beat him up. They told them that any further trouble to their sister would land him in a bigger trouble. Ranjit was not willing to be cowed down by the brothers.

Around 4 pm on Thursday, Anam, Manmatha and Lakshmi were on their way to Garamthan, a ground outside the village, where a Makar Sankranti fair was being held. The three were going to watch a cock fight at the fair.

Ranjit, accompanied by five more boys — all from the same village — confronted them. He was carrying a countrymade revolver in one hand and a bhojali in another, while others were armed with lathis and bhojalis. Immediately, Anam fled, leaving his brother and sister behind.

When Ranjit took aim at Manmatha, Lakshmi ran towards him to prevent him from pulling the trigger. Ranjit stabbed her with the bhojali. As Lakshmi fell down, he fired a single shot that hit Manmatha in the abdomen. Both of them collapsed and lay in a pool of blood.

When police went to Salukgeria village, they could not find Ranjit or his friends. Police are looking for them.
