Quack widow held for killing daughter

HOWRAH: Sutapa Bag, widow of Jayanta Bag, who was found dead with his daughter Piyasi at their Jagachha home last year, was arrested from Domjur on Thursday. She was held on charges of murdering Piyasi and assisting her husband to commit suicide. Later, Howrah ACJ court remanded her in judicial custody for two weeks.

Since she was discharged from hospital last year, Sutapa was staying with her schoolteacher father at Rudrapur in Domjur.

On April 4 last year, the Bag couple had entered a suicide pact after the quack’s clandestine abortion and pornography racket was busted by four boys in their locality. When the boys threatened to expose them, the couple slashed their only daughter using Jayanta’s surgical blade before inflicting the same injuries on themselves. The girl bled to death while Jayanta died on his way to hospital. Sutapa, however, survived.

The duo had even drafted a suicide note where Jayanta had confessed that their lives would become unbearable after people come to know about his misdeeds. Hence, he reasoned that it was better to embrace death than living a life of ignominy.

"Though our initial investigations had proved that Sutapa was a partner in crime, we did not arrest her immediately as she was yet to recover fully and was under tremendous depression after the incident," said a senior police officer.

The four boys, who had threatened the Bags, had beaten up Jayanta on the fateful evening. They had also snatched Jayanta’s cellphone which the quack had used to shoot the abortion of the girlfriend of one of the boys. The four were arrested.

The case was later handed over to CID. The agency submitted its chargesheet on January 24. The Howrah ACJ court had then directed police to arrest Sutapa.

No one accompanied Sutapa on Thursday when she was produced in court.
