Mukesh to bring gas to Bengal by 2011

KOLKATA: Mukesh Ambani is sold on Bengal, despite the small irritant about his retail foray not taking off in the state as yet.

On Thursday, the chairman of India’s biggest corporate in terms of market capitalisation spent an hour at a Mumbai hotel closeted with a Bengal delegation - led by the state’s commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen - to signal Reliance Industries’ keenness to bring gas to the state within two to three years. The possibility of being involved with the ambitious petroleum, chemicals and petrochemicals investment region (PCPIR) project was also explored.

"During the meeting, he (Ambani) showed interest in the deep sea port venture since such a facility is necessary for a refinery. Our pitch on the PCPIR was simple - Reliance should be involved in the project in any way it deems fit," state commerce and industries secretary Sabyasachi Sen told TOI from Mumbai. The secretary is part of the delegation hardselling the state to prospective investors in India’s financial capital.

The secretary quoted Ambani as saying that some permissions were still required from the Centre on the pipeline that would bring the gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin. "We will follow up with the Reliance chairman on this front since gas is most important for Bengal’s industrial progress," he said. "The retail issue was not raised during the interaction."

On Wednesday, the Bengal delegation had visited Reliance’s Jamnagar facility. Reliance officials declined to comment on Ambani’s meeting with Bengal officials.
