KOLKATA: Children were suffering from fever while boiled eggs and chicken curry were being served as mid-day meals in some schools in bird flu affected districts of West Bengal, the WBPCC said on Friday.

WBPCC General Secretary Manas Bhuiyan told reporters that children were suffering from fever in Howrah, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts which should be probed by a medical team to ascertain if there was any link with the bird flu virus.

He claimed he had reports that boiled eggs and chicken curry were being served at mid-day meals in schools in some affected districts.

"We demand that there should be a ban on the serving of eggs and chicken in the affected districts for three weeks," he said.

"I talked to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and the Union Health minister Ambumani Ramadoss who expressed disappointment at the manner the bird flu situation is being dealt with by the state government," he said.

The state government was late in informing the Centre about the outbreak, which was cooperating in every way, he said.

"It is due to absolute callousness and lack of coordination between different departments that the disease has spread," he alleged.

BJP state General Secretary Rahul Sinha alleged the state government had 'failed' to check the avian influenza due to lack of infrastructure.

He demanded West Bengal's border with Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand and Bangladesh be sealed to check smuggling of infected birds.
