The fire, which was started on 7 February, has already claimed the lives of Bahadur’s wife Kamala and their 13-year-old daughter Dipika. While Kamala died on the spot at their burning house and Dipika breathed her last on 8 February, Bahadur had been fighting for his life since the incident took place. Doctors had stated his condition to be critical as he had suffered 80 per cent burns. It has been alleged that the landlord, Kashi Jaiswal, set the Shaws’ residence, at 276, GT Road, Shibpur, on fire by placing a gas cylinder outside their house and pushing a pipe, attached to the cylinder, through a hole inside. The Shaws were attacked as they had been active in protesting against the landlord’s ploy to remove the tenants from the plot and build a high-rise on the same. Bahadur Shaw, his wife Kamala Shaw (40) and their two children, Dinesh (15) and Dipika (13) were sleeping at their house when the incident took place around 3.30 a.m. on 7 February. The fire had engulfed Kamala, claiming her life on the spot. Bahadur, Dinesh and Dipika were rushed to hospital by neighbours. The couple’s eldest son, Ritesh Shaw (20), and his brother, Dinesh Shaw, are the only surviving members of the family.
