Rajpati Devi from Kharagpur expired on the streets of Kolkata because she was denied treatment at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute. She was 75 years old suffering from liver cancer.Doctors at Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital had referred her to Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute for better treatment. But the security officials at the hospital didn't let her inside the premises.Rajpati Devi’s son Chandrama Prasad Sharma requested the guards to let him talk to the doctors but they were not even attended because the patient did not have a registration card. Chandrama Prasad alleged that the guards refused to give in evenwhen his mother was lying on the pavement writhing in pain. The Institute at Hazra is run jointly by the central and state governments, with the Union health minister as chairman and the state health minister as vice-chairman.The vice-chairman of the institute’s governing body ensured that the health department would definitely take action once it receives a formal complaint. At Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute the registration of outdoor patients is done between 9am and 11.30am and Rajpati Devi had arrived at 8.30pm.The guards reported that they have rigid orders not to allow any patient inside the hospital without a registration card.
