CPM congress to decide upon Basu's fate

Veteran Communist leader Jyoti Basu will not be attending the CPM's 19th party congress beginning in Coimbatore on Saturday. However, Basu has given the congress the task of deciding whether he should be allowed to retire from the party's Politburo and Central Committee.

On the eve of the party congress, the former West Bengal Chief Minister has written to CPM general secretary Prakash Karat, requesting that he be allowed to relinquish his membership of the two policy making bodies.

So far, the party leadership has failed to persuade him to change his mind.

Providing some details on the issue, CPM state secretary Biman Bose said, ''It is a fact that he has written a letter to the party leadership that he is not in a position to discharge his responsibilities as member of Politburo and Central Committee.

Basu's letter, earlier in March, had Prakash Karat rushing to Kolkata last week and call on him, along with Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and Biman Bose.

The outcome of that meeting is not known, but Basu's request will now be discussed at the party congress where delegates will have to elect new Central Committee and a new Politburo.

''We do not feel that at this age, he has to perform this duty or that duty. We need his suggestion and advice because of his 67 years of experience in the party, said Biman Bose.

Basu's exit, if permitted, could affect the CPM's policy towards the Congress. It was Basu and Harkishen Singh Surjeet who cajoled the party away from its policy of equidistance from the Congress and the BJP and identified communalism as the bigger threat.

For now, the CPM is very reluctant to let the veteran leader go. He has been a member of the Politburo ever since the party was founded in 1964. This is the first time Basu will be absent from a party congress, however, he will certainly be conspicuous for it.
