Abducted youth released for ransom?
Mystery shrouds the alleged abduction of a 21-year-old youth from Janbazar area in New Market a few days ago and his subsequent safe return this morning. Police, who could not confirm whether the family members had paid any ransom to secure his release, seem to maintain a staunch silence in the case, for reasons best known to them.
Prateek Gupta went missing on 9 March, while his family had left the state for a tour on 8 March, leaving Prateek alone at their home, a family member of the youth said. Prateek's father was not able to contact him from the afternoon of 9 March. Worried family members returned back home the next day and found the youth missing.
A senior police officer of detective department, however, said family members lodged an abduction complaint with New Market police station on 19 March, 10 days after the mysterious disappearance of Prateek. Police said Prateek's father Premsagar Gupta, got a call this morning and he came to know that his son had been dumped near Sealdah station. He rushed to the station and later brought him back home.
But, police failed to answer how Prateek was abducted and how he reached Sealdah station. “We have to talk with the youth. We would ask the youth how he was abducted. We don't know whether family members had paid any money to ensure his release,” said an officer.
