Three persons arrested for attacking Saugata Roy's car
Kolkata: Three persons were on Sunday arrested in connection with Saturday's attack on senior Trinamool Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Saugata Roy in North 24-Parganas district, police said.
Roy was attacked by unidentified persons, who threw brickbats at him, at Gopalnagar near his constituency in Bongaon in North 24-paraganas district, while he was going to address a public meeting. Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) of North 24-Parganas district Sugata Sen said that the arrested were all teenagers.
Sen said that Roy, a former Union minister, had filed an FIR with the local police station in which he stated that one of the brickbats hurled by the attackers had hit him on his chest. He was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries. Roy, on Sunday alleged that the attackers were goons backed by local Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
"Initially, I could not make out anything in the pitched darkness at the time of the incident, but later last night I learned that the attackers were notorious criminals backed by local CPI-M. The police was not arresting real culprits," Roy said.
However, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said that he had no information, if the attackers were CPI-M supporters and added that an inquiry was on. Earlier, West Bengal Pradesh Congress President Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi has condemned the attack on Roy and demanded that the government take firm action to book the culprits.
In a strongly-worded statement, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President said, "If public representatives are hurt and injured with direct patronage of the party in power, it will end the democratic functioning of the people's representatives in the state."
Rejecting his partymen's involvement in the attack, CPI-M Bongaon Zonal Committee Secretary Pankaj Ghosh alleged that the Trinamool Congress was trying to create a reign of terror in the constituency ahead of the coming panchayat elections.
Trinamool Congress activists today held demonstrations and blocked roads in several areas in Roy's constituency to protest against the attack. (PTI)
