Kolkata, April 02 The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Special Operations Group (SOG) apprehended a 36-year-old man on Wednesday dealing in illegal trade of arms and ammunition.

Seven .32 bore automatic pistols, one .38 bore revolver and 150 rounds f ammunition, including rifle bullets, were recovered from him.

An SOG spokesperson told mediapersons that Tapan Saha, a Howrah resident, was picked up from the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

During interrogation, he claimed procuring the guns from Munger in Bihar.

Though he said that he got ammunition from Uttar Pradesh, the small cardboard boxes containing bullets had name of a Pune ammunition factory imprinted on it.

“The boxes could have been forged. We can’t reveal at present who the arms were intended for. Also, it is not clear if the guns are locally made or foreign. They are of high quality and are valued between Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 in the illegal arms market,” the police spokesperson said.

According to the investigating agency, Saha used various means of public transport like trains and buses, and changed the mode of transport several times to avoid detection.

He was shabbily dressed and was wearing sandals, which would have invited little suspicion. More raids are likely to be conducted.
