"Strike at Haldia Petrochemical called off"
Haldia (West Bengal): The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today called off the strike, which was to be held on April 8 on an issue of confirmation of permanent posts to 183 casual workers out of 1,500 at Haldia Petrochemicals.
This was going to be the first strike at Haldia Petrochemicals, West Bengal's largest petrochemical hub. It was being called by the state labour arm of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
The strike was planned, to compel the authorities to give a permanent post to 183 out of 1,500 casual workers who work in the factory. However based on mutual negotiations between the management and the workers the 24-hour strike was called off.
CITU member and the secretary of the trade union's Haldia Zonal Committee, Ashok Patnaik said, “The management has assured us that it will pay heed to our grievances and based on their promises we have decided to postpone the strike at the moment.”
Since its inception in 2001, the USD 1.2 billion investment petrochemical factory has not faced any labour problem as well as consequent strike.
The Naptha-based petrochemical complex at Haldia, is a joint collaboration of West Bengal Development Corporation, the Chatterjee Petrochem (Mauritius) Co Ltd and the Tata Group.
