GJM calls bandh in Darjeeling; normal life affected in hills

Normal life in the hills of Darjeeling lay paralysed on Thursday in the wake the 24-hour Darjeeling bandh (general strike) called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to protest police action against their activists and supporters. All three hill sub-division including Kurseong and Kalimpong wore deserted look because of the bandh.

All educational institutions, business establishments, shops and markets remained closed in Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong subdivisions where vehicles were off the roads. However, in Siliguri sub-division, located in the plains, the bandh was partial with its effect limited to certain pockets, sources said. The GJM activists demonstrated on the outskirts of Siliguri. Additional police personnel were deployed in various parts of the district.

The bandh was called to protest against the use of batons and teargas shells by police on Wednesday to disperse GJM activists who tried to take out a procession. The GJM workers clashed with policemen when they tried to stop the demonstration. Ten policemen, ten GJM supporters and three media persons were injured in the clash.

The bandh was being supported by the Kamtapur Peoples Party and greater Coochbehar Democratic Party. While the GJM has revived the demand for a separate state of Gorkhland, the KPP and GCDP are agitating for creation of separate states of Kamtapur and Coochbehar respectively.
