11 pilgrims killed in WB road mishaps

Eleven pilgrims, who were on their barefoot ritualistic walk to Shiva temples to celebrate Chaitra Sankranti, were killed on Saturday in separate road accidents in West Bengal, police said.
 
They said five women and two children were killed in the wee hours today a few meters away from their residence at Vasa in West Bengal's South 24-Parganas district after being hit by a speeding truck.

Police said they were on their 123-km journey to the famed Tarakeswar Temple in Hooghly district.

While Ashoka Patra (40), Subhra Adak (35) and Aparna Hati (11) died on the spot, Bula Hati (24) and Rema Hati (5) were admitted to a hospital, police said, adding that Aparna, Bula and Rema were members of a family.

In another mishap, four pilgrims on their trek to a Shiva temple at Billagram were crushed to death by a 10-wheeled lorry at Oregram in Bardhaman district, Superintendent of Police, Piyush Pandey said.

The incident occurred when the four -- Ujjal Ghosh (20) Asim Karmakar (18) Sunil Kisku (24) and Lakhsiram Hansda (24) -- were taking rest under a roadside tree.
