Fresh clashes in Nandigram, 8 injured
Ahead of the panchayat polls in West Bengal, at least eight supporters of anti-land acquisition forum Bhoomi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) were injured in a fresh clash with CPM cadres in Nandigram early on Saturday.
East Midnapore Superintendent of Police S Panda said senior police officers have rushed to the spot and proper measures would be initiated against the accused immediately.
The injured were admitted to a primary health centre in Nandigram, Panda said.
Meanwhile Trinamool Congress (TC) block leader and convener of anti-land acquisition forum, Abu Taher alleged that two women were raped at Adhikaripara village in Nandigram when CPI-M cadres looted the village at around 2 am on Saturday during the clash.
CPM denied the charges. Local CPM leader Ashok Guria alleged that the clash began after TC supporters raided the houses of their sympathisers. ''They have lost support in Nandigram and these allegations are pranks to attract attention,'' Guria said.
Nandigram police station was gheraoed on Friday by the supporters of Trinamool Congress after three party activists were arrested on the charge of killing a CPM Panchayat Samity member last year.
