30 buried radioactive sources detected

Beijing, May 20: China has so far recovered 30 of the 32 radioactive sources which were buried under the debris during the devastating May 12 earthquake, minister for environmental protection Zhou Shengxian said. He said locations of two other radioactive sources had been detected and they would also be transported to "safe areas" soon.

Altogether, 32 radioactive sources were buried during the earthquake last week. China said all its civilian nuclear facilities and radioactive sources in the Sichuan province were confirmed "safe" and "controllable". (PTI)

Odd frog migration deemed as warning

Beijing, May 20: Thousands of Chinese fled for cover in fear of an earthquake on Tuesday, alarmed not only by warnings from seismologists but also by an unusual mass movement of frogs, state media said.

For the second time this month, residents observed a huge migration of frogs and toads, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

Residents of Zunyi that saw little damage in China’s massive earthquake noticed the amphibians’ march on Monday.

Thousands of residents camped out in fear overnight in downtown Zunyi, the news agency said. (AFP)
