Car bomb kills 7 Iraqi policemen

Baghdad: A car bomb in the central Iraqi town of Dhuluiya on Sunday killed at least seven policemen and wounded two more, the town’s police chief said. Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Khalid said the explosion occurred at around 7.30 am in the town 70 km north of Baghdad in the central Sunni province of Salaheddin.

"The police received a call about an abandoned car on a road. A team of policemen went to check and as they reached the car it exploded," Mr Khalid said. The latest attack came as the Salaheddin authorities gave insurgents until July 8 to surrender to US and Iraqi forces. —AFP

China will resume Tibet talks in July

Beijing: Chinese authorities will resume talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama in early July following a request from the exiled Buddhist spiritual leader. "Our door is always open for the dialogue with the Dalai Lama," Xinhua news agency quoted a government spokesman as saying on Sunday.

"(We) hope that the Dalai Lama would treasure this opportunity and give positive response to the requirements of the central authorities." No precise date was given for the resumption of talks. —AFP

PAF gets 4 more F-16s from US

June 29: The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has received four more F-16 aircraft.

A ceremony for handing over F-16 aircraft was held at the PAF Base Mushaf in Sargodha district on Saturday. Air Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman received the Fighting Falcons from Lt. Gen. Gary L. North, commander, 9th Air Force and USAF central command, said a PAF statement. "The aircraft which arrived on Saturday, have the same operational capability as of the already owned F-16 aircraft by the PAF." the statement said.

11 killed in Afghan violence

Herat, Afghanistan: About 150 Taliban militants stormed a government building in southwestern Afghanistan on early Sunday, killing at least four policemen and losing seven of their own fighters, officials said.

The rebels stormed the building in Farah province in an attempt to capture a remote town, the deputy provincial governor said, sparking a gun-battle between the militants and the police. "Four policemen and seven Taliban attackers were killed in fighting," Mohammed Younus Rasouli said, adding five other officers and three rebels were injured in the clashes, which started shortly after midnight.
