Tibet issue: US asks China to free 8 Americans

Beijing, Aug. 24: The US on Sunday asked China to free immediately eight of its nationals, detained for engaging in pro-Dalai Lama activities during the Olympics, criticising it for "not using" the occasion to demonstrate respect for human rights and tolerance. US ambassador to China Clark T. Randt pressed the Chinese government for the immediate release of eight Americans currently being detained in Beijing, the embassy said in a statement, hours before the closing ceremony of the 2008 Games.

"We are continuing to raise our concerns at senior levels of the Chinese government and to follow their cases closely," the statement said, noting that consular officials from the US embassy met with the detained Americans in Beijing. —PTI
