Outrage in Pak over ‘Muslim Massacre’

Islamabad, Sept. 12: A controversial computer game in which an American soldier massacres Muslims has provoked outrage among Pakistanis.

"Muslim Massacre", the computer game designed by an American and launched on the anniversary of 9/11 attacks, can be downloaded for free from the Internet.

The object of the game is to ensure that "no Muslim man or woman is left alive," according to the game’s creator, a 22-year old US-born man who calls himself Eric Sigvitr Vaugh and who lives in Australia. Players control an "American Hero" armed with a machine gun and rocket launcher who is dropped into West Asia by parachute.

There are various levels through which players make progress and gamers fire a variety of weapons at characters in traditional Islamic dress. Though the game has infuriated Muslims across the globe, Eric has a different take on the game. "If I was to try and come up with a meaning for the game at this moment, it would probably be something along the lines of metaphorically destroying the stereotypical depiction of a Muslim," he was quoted as saying by the media.

A leading UK-based Muslim youth organisation the Ramadhan Foundation has expressed its "deep anger" at the release of the game on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. —PTI
