Indian harassed by Nepal police

Kathmandu, Oct. 23: The police in Nepal has been accused of harassing people operating vehicles with Indian number plates in the country. Bikram Maira, a tour operator, alleged that he was manhandled by the police and asked NRs 16,000 as bribe in Nepal’s western town of Mahen-dranagar.

The incident comes as the Maoists, who lead the coalition government in Nepal, have often raised the demand for banning vehicles with Indian number plates in the Himalayan nation. Mr Maira, son of former staff of Indian embassy in Kathmandu, was on his way to the capital from Manali along with 12 Indian tourists by a jeep with Indian number plate when he was stopped by the traffic police and asked to show the permit for entering the country. Despite having paid NRs 400 charges for operating the vehicle within Nepalese territory for three days, he accused the police of misbehaving with him.
