Oct. 25: The City Airport was evacuated and flights were grounded on Friday afternoon due to fumes in a toilet.
The London City Airport is the only airport that is actually in London and is used by over 2.9 million passengers annually. The airport is used mainly to catch flights to all the major cities in continental Europe.
The fumes were traced to a package in a ladies toilet inside the terminal and this led to the airport authorities and the police evacuating everyone from the main building. The airport which is connected to the City and Canary Wharf by DLR monorail did not get train service due to evacuation.
Flights were diverted for about two hours and the airport reopened just after 4.30 pm.
The Metropolitan police confirmed that the incident was not linked to terrorism. The alarm about the mysterious package was raised after people complained coughing and irritation due to fumes.
The London Brigade, which was also summoned along with the police to the airport, has not as yet identified the mysterious substance.
