North Bengal tea garden employees to go on indefinite strike

More than 3.50 lakh workers and employees of over 300 tea gardens have decided to go on indefinite strike from August 18, 2008 demanding immediate revival of the wage and salary agreement between workers and planters unions.

The decision was taken at a meeting of 'Coordination Committees of Plantations Workers and Employees' in Jalpaiguri on Tuesday, in which leaders of 17 separate trade unions including CITU, INTUC and UTUC participated.

The demands include renewal of the agreement to ensure enhanced wage rate and salaries for the plantation workers and employees.

Trade union leaders like Zia-Ul Alam, Monohar Terke, Monikumar Darnal and Kalyan Roy said that the employers were not restructuring the wage and salaries rate and they would have to go on strike.

A notice to this effect will be submitted to the owners of the tea gardens on July 28, 2008.

Prior to that several conventions will be held between August 5 and 8 in Dooars, Darjeeling and Terai. They will also launch massive rallies from August 11 to 18 in support of their demands.

Samir Roy, General Secretary of Defence Committee for plantation workers has said that they will launch a greater movement if the tea garden owners do not take steps for restructuring the wage scales.

Indian Tea Planters Association Secretary N K Basu has said that wage revision would cause huge loss to the tea industry.
