Goutam Ghosh to direct first Indo-Italian production

Internationally acclaimed director Goutam Ghosh will soon direct the first Indo-Italian private production.

Titled The story of Lala, the feature film, to be made in English and Hindi, will be co-financed by Ghosh's friends, well-known Italian producer Sergio Scapagnini.

The feature film will be an adaptation of Scapagnini The allegorical tale published by Penguin. The storyline of the book is based metaphorically on the legend of Ulysses about how an 11-year-old boy realises his dreams.

Shooting will begin November 2008 in some locations in north India and Europe, including Italy, Ghosh said in Kolkata.

"I have finished the final script which revolves round Lala - a young boy who meets a foreign director during the filmmaker's trip to India. The foreigner gets captivated by the colour, smell, spirit of life of this ancient civilization and embarks on the fascinating journey in a new frame of mind," he said.

Ghosh is hunting for a child actor who will perfectly fit the bill of Lala.

"I want a boy who will as much live his part as the Tare Zameen Par boy Darsheel Safary," he said.

To a question if Hollywood star Omar Sharif besides big Indian names like Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Sanjay Dutt would feature in his film, Ghosh said these were mere speculation.

"I will not go by names but rope in characters that could be moulded in the characters of the film. They may or may not be popular actors," he added.
