Canvas call

Film-maker Goutam Ghose shies away from any query on his passion for painting. But three of his artwork are on display at the Academy of Fine Arts till March 16.

“I am a painter, but I do functional painting, which is designing the sets and doing the frames. Cinematography is painting too.... Basically, I have done two impressionistic paintings on the photograph of a palm leaf. They look like women’s faces,” says Ghose. The exhibition has been put together by Arts 39, a forum for artists.

“I don’t paint on a regular basis. Artist Dhiraj Chowdhury had once suggested that I try my hand at painting... So I thought of working on the photograph of the palm leaf that I had taken long ago,” explains the budding artist, who draws inspiration from folk art.

But will he find enough time to divide between film-making and his new-found passion? “I don’t know. I have never given it a thought. But painting is much more hassle-free than film-making,” signs off Ghose.
