SC gives clean chit to Big B over Barabanki land dispute

New Delhi: In a big relief to Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, the Supreme Court today dismissed a petition - seeking criminal proceeding against the film star - by Uttar Pradesh government over the land dispute of Baranbanki.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice K Balakrishnan dismissed the petition and upheld the judgment of the Lucknow bench of Allhabad High Court on December 11, 2008 that that no civil, revenue or criminal case shall be initiated against him in the concerned land dispute.

The Mayawati government had moved the apex court challenging the high Court's decision and had sought directions to initiate criminal proceeding on Bachchan for alleged forgery in that land dispute.

It is noteworthy that Amitabh, who had first claimed that in the capacity of a farmer, he owned 2.5 bigha of land in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. Once Amitabh's disclosure struck controversy, he announced to donate that land. Based upon the same land, Amitabh had made land deal worth Rupees crores in Pune.
