Kolkata police is ready to initiate its biggest modernisation project at a cost of Rs 28 crore.They have guaranteed world class service in all segments to the people of Kolkata.The hi-tech policing format will start by next month with a focus on the development of a computerised traffic regulation system, complete with a digital map of the city and cameras installed at crossings to monitor vehicular movements. Senior officers reported that they will depend on the system to track down vehicles speeding away after an accident or abductors fleeing with their victim.The project had been in the pipeline awaiting funds from the Centre for the past two years.Delhi has finally approved Rs 13.65 crore for the first phase of the project. The changes are expected to come into effect by the year 2009.A number of professors from Jadavpur University and Besu, Shibpur, have come forward to help execute the scheme.As a first step, a digital map of the city will be installed in the Lalbazar control room.All intersections and important buildings will be listed on the map.Cameras will be installed at 42 intersections and they will transmit signals round the clock to the traffic control room.The cameras will also have in-built gadgets to track the registration numbers of the vehicles passing by.
