Marxist (CPI-M), the Trinamool Congress, the main opposition party in West Bengal, today surged ahead in panchayat samities and gram panchayats in South and North 24 Parganas districts of the state. The opposition Congress was far ahead of the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Front in seats in North Dinajpur and Malda district. Humbling CPI(M) in East Midnapore in 20 of the 25 panchayat samities, the Trinamool Congress succeeded in outsmarting the marxist party with a 152-59 margin in 223 Trinamool gram panchayats in the district. The results of 12 gram panchayats were yet to be declared. The Trinamool Congress also maintained its march in panchayat samities in South 24 Parganas, mostly wresting 19 of the total 29 seats. The Left Front's defeat in some of the districts, particularly East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas, was construed as a referendum on the Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee government's land acquisition drive for industries. The Front also suffered a jolt at Singur, the site of the Tata Motors Nano car project, with the Trinamool Congress wresting all three zilla parishad seats from the CPI(M) on Wednesday. (PTI)
