The Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) today said that it was never against nuclear energy per se but asked how the Indo-US nuclear deal would help India in this field. Briefing to the media in national capital, party Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said: “Given the conditionalities of the Hyde Act and the 123 agreement, how can the deal be beneficial to India in meeting its energy needs.” His comments came in the backdrop of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was committed to developing nuclear energy as part of a multi-pronged strategy for energy security as the country could not depend on just one or two sources to meet the growing demand for power. “Our government is committed to further development of energy both as an environment friendly source of power and as a means of widening the energy basket available to us,” Singh said.
