Government announces the locations of 4 IITs and 6 IIMs

Government today announced the location of four new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), six new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and 14 Central Universities. The new IITs will come up in Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab, while the IIMs will be set up in Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.

Government today announced the location of four new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), six new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and 14 Central Universities. The new IITs will come up in Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab, while the IIMs will be set up in Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.

Government has already announced the establishment of four IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh and one IIM at Shillong. These new technical education institutions is a part of the eight IITs and seven IIMs proposed to be set up under the 11th Five Year Plan.

Announcing this, Union Human Resource Minister Arjun Singh said, "The Prime Minister has approved the proposals made by us for the location of these four new IITs and six IIMs."

Apart from the IITs and IIMs, the government has also announced to upgrade the existing institutes. Under the program, the Institute of Technology of the Banaras Hindu University will be elevated to IIT status, as the admission to this institute is already based on the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination.

The location of 14 Central Universities, as envisaged in the 11th plan aiming at world class standards, has also been decided. These varsities will be established in Pune, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Mysore, Visakhapatnam, Gandhinagar, Jaipur, Patna, Bhopal, Kochi, Amritsar, Bhubaneswar, Greater Noida and Guwahati.

The locations have been decided keeping in mind the connectivity and the infrastructure which such universities would need, he said. The state governments would be requested to identify adequate land in or near the selected cities, Singh said adding that the contour and shape of such world class universities would be defined shortly.

Responding to a question, whether the decision to set up these new institutions was based on political considerations, Singh said the government has decided on them after taking everything into consideration. The establishment of new IITs, IIMs and Central Universities was subject to state governments offering adequate land at suitable locations and free of cost, Singh added.

Sixteen states which do not have a Central University at present and which will get one each in the 11th plan are Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Punjab, Harayan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Goa.

Of these, three state universities (Dr Hari Singh Gaur University, Sagar in Madhya Pradesh; Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur in Chattisgarh; and Goa University) will be promoted to Central Universities status.
