Culling begins in Jalpaiguri after bird flu outbreak

Culling of affected birds began at Jalpaiguri on Friday after bird flu was confirmed in the district. A day before Holi the blood samples of dead chicken from Mondolghat, close to Jalpaiguri was sent to Bhopal for examination. The reports, which came back on Thursday afternoon, confirmed a blood flu outbreak in the district.

Jalpaiguri: Culling of affected birds began at Jalpaiguri on Friday after bird flu was confirmed in the district. A day before Holi the blood samples of dead chicken from Mondolghat, close to Jalpaiguri was sent to Bhopal for examination. The reports, which came back on Thursday afternoon, confirmed a blood flu outbreak in the district.   The report has triggered panic bells in the regional district administration offices that have come together to formulate a strategy in order to curb this menace.  At an emergency meeting, held on Thursday, it was decided that the culling will begin on Friday and will be done in areas that fall within five-km radius of Mondolghat. To aid the culling operation the state government has already sent Rs 40 lakh.   On Friday around 50 culling teams, each comprising 10 members were employed in the operation that aims to terminate over 48,000 chickens in the affected areas. The district administration has also announced a ban on the sale of chicken within 10 square kms of the affected area.   “We have taken up this operation on an emergency basis and we will complete the culling by Sunday,” said R Ranjit, Jalpaiguri district magistrate. As per the official sources 112 chickens have died in Mondolghat area in the last 20 days, but the unofficial sources confirm the number of deceased bird to be 1000.
