Culling begins in Ranaghat as fresh out-break of birdflu detected

After the confirmation of bird flu in the Ranaghat area of West Bengal's Nadia district, culling operation has been started on Sunday. The state administration has started the operation in two blocks of Ranaghat which includes the entire Ranaghat civic area and three wards of Cooper camp notified authority.

The culling operation, which will last for three days, is being accomplished by 25 teams with seven people in each. Till Sunday evening, 4860 birds of state government owned firm located at Mission age, were killed. Around 3000 eggs were also destroyed, said the state official, Kamalkanta Saha who is also in charge of the teams.

The teams which would be culling in villages would be provided adequate police protection to avoid any untoward incident and public wrath, sources said.

The state administration came into action when a report of Bhopal based laboratory confirmed the death of 700 birds in Madalpukur area of Ranaghat due to avian influenza virus on Saturday. Meanwhile, sell and transportation of chickens in and around Ranaghat have been banned.
