Kharagpur IIT to get Rs 400 crores for the development of infrastructure and courses
"After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared that all the IIT institutes should expand their courses and develop research facilities, we submitted a proposal to the HRD ministry, who later sanctioned the amount. We have received Rs 65 to Rs 70 crores for this fiscal year," deputy-director of IIT-Kharagpur Madhusudan Chakraborty said.
The institute is currently engaged in recruiting almost 150 professors and teachers for all streams. A new lecture theatre, tutorial class complex where a large number of students can be accommodated, a large laboratory complex with infrastructure for physics, chemistry, language, drawing and others are also going to come up on the campus. Besides these, three hostels with an accommodation for 2,000 students with a separate one for girls has been included in the plan.
The institute is going to invest in new courses and come up with centres like the school of entrepreneurship, steel technology centre and a centre for telecommunications.
A former student has donated $1 million with the help of which the authorities will come up with a new centre under the name of Ranger and Titre Gupta School of Infrastructure and Management.
