Student invokes RTI, moves HC to see answer sheet

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday asked a student of a prestigious college who invoked the Right To Information Act to see his B Sc answer sheet, to explain how something written by him can be treated as information.

Justice Sanjib Banerjee directed the student to come up with an explanation tomorrow when the matter would be heard again.

Preetam Rooz, a former Maths honours student Presidency College here moved court to claim access to the answer sheet of his B. Sc fifth paper in which he first secured 28 marks and later 32 after a review.

He petitioned the Calcutta University authorities to be shown his answer sheet under RTI, but was turned down and then moved the High Court.

University counsel S Chakraborti submitted that the answer sheet of a student cannot be considered information as it is who has written the answers.

He said the state Information Commission and the Central Information Commission had advised the university not to hand over the answer sheet to the student.

Rooz claimed he had written the right answers and wanted to know how many marks he had been awarded for each question.
