Ranchi: Three policemen and two Maoist rebels were killed in a fierce gun battle in Jharkhand today, the police said in Ranchi. According to the police, Maoist rebels ambushed police vehicles on long range patrolling near Pokharia village of Dumka district, around 460 kilometres from Ranchi on Saturday morning.In the ensuing gun battle, which lasted nearly three hours, three policemen, including officer-in-charge of Shikaripara police station Shamsad Ansari, were killed. The police claimed to have gunned down two rebels and captured one.
This is the first gun battle between the Maoists and the security personnel in Dumka district. The area was earlier considered free from rebel activity. Maoists are active in 18 of 24 districts of the state. (IANS)
