Retired colonel convicted for murder after 25 years

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday convicted a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the army in a case of murder of Kishan Sikand -a businessman - by a hand grenade planted in a parcel bomb on October 2, 1982.

Additional District and Sessions Judge, Tis Hazari, Mamta Sehgal found Suraj Jit Choudhary guilty under section-302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section-3 & 4 of Explosive Substances Act, 1908.

The case was originally registered with P S Hazrat Nizammudin on October 2, 1982 and subsequently transferred to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). After completion of the investigation, CBI filed a charge sheet against the accused on October 22, 1983.

During investigation, CBI found that Rani Choudhary, a widow with two daughters, was married to the accused in 1971 but there was marital discord between the couple. She filed a divorce petition in a district court on the ground of cruelty and eventually the court issued ex-parte decree of divorce in her favour.

Subsequently, she started living with Kishan Sikand, the deceased business man, at his Sunder Nagar house from the end of 1980. The accused objected to her relationship with Kishan Sikand and planted a hand grenade which caused his death.

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on April 30, 2008.
