Mahesh Kumar doused Rinku Sharma’s wife Meenaskshi with kerosene oil and set her afire when she was alone at her Noharia Bazar residence on Wednesday, they said. The victim, with over 40 per cent burn injuries, has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. Mahesh has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Mahesh and Rinku Sharma, both of them car drivers, had been close friends at one time but their relationship had soured due to a monetary dispute between them. (PTI) *** Convict arrested after 27 years Muzaffarnagar, May 8: A life convict who escaped from the district prison 27 years ago has been arrested by the police and brought back to the prison. Afzal, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 1981, escaped soon after being awarded the punishment by a local court and had been living in Bihar since then, the police sources said on Thursday. He was arrested on Wednesday. He has been brought to the district jail here to serve the remainder of his term. *** Film on Sonia on hold, says director Mumbai, May 8: The film Sonia, based on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s life, is on hold due to opposition from the Congress party, filmmaker Jagmohan Mundra said. The film, an adaptation from the biography of Gandhi by Delhi based journalist Rashid Kidwai, was to star Italian actress Monica Belluci in the lead role of Sonia and cover a span of her life from 1964 to 2004. The pre-production work was completed but had to be put on hold due to objections from the Congress stating that the biography was not authorised. (PTI) *** Army for jammers on Punjab border Nashik, May 8: The Indian Army is planning to set mobile jammers near Punjab border to avoid leak of information through mobile towers erected by Pakistan near it. Interacting with newspersons at Gandhi Nagar airstrip, about 3 kms from here on Thursday morning, Lt. General Nobel Thamburaj of southern command told that some towers erected near the border are intended for observation and other purposes. When asked that pilots are being trained at Combat Army Aviation Training School here with old helicopters, he said the schools are providing them basic training. (PTI)
