Army protests Pak firing near LoC

Srinagar, May 21: A senior Army commander on Wednesday held a flag meeting with his Pakistani counterpart at Roshni post in Mendhar sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir to lodge a protest over the recent firing incident from across the Line of Control and discuss its fallout on the situation in the area. An Army personnel belonging to 2/8 Gorkha Rifle was killed in the firing incident. According to officials, under-barrel and rocket-propelled grenades were also used on the morning of May 19.

Defence sources in Jammu said that the flag meeting was held specially to ease mounting tensions along the stretch of the LoC as a result of the firing incident. However, defence spokesperson Lt. Col. S.D. Goswami said that the Indian side lodged a strong protest with the Pakistanis over the "unprovoked firing" incident. The Indian side was represented by Colonel Manish Kumar of 2/8 Gorkha Rifles, while Lt. Col. S. Malik represented the Pakistani Rangers deployed in the region.

Meanwhile, Indian troops smashed a militant hideout set up in the village Sanjyot in Poonch.

Militant arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, May 21: The special cell of the Delhi police has arrested a suspected Harkut-ul-Jehad-al-Islami (HuJI) militant from the city on Wednesday evening. Although the officials were reluctant to confirm the arrest, sources said that the militant was detained from a railway station in a joint operation conducted by the Crime Branch and special cell of the Delhi police.

The unidentified militant, whose age is confirmed to be between 30-35 years, was arrested from Chelmsford road near the railway station on Wednesday at around 8.30 pm by the sleuths of special cell and the crime branch in a joint operation. The police sources said that the militant is wanted by the STF in Uttar Pradesh.
