May 25: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences early on Sunday morning where he underwent a successful cataract operation in his right eye.
Hospital sources said that 75-year-old Dr Singh has been suffering from an eye-trouble since two years and was treated at AIIMS routinely. Dr Singh chose Sunday for his hospital visits to avoid media attention, sources said. Meanwhile, doctors said that Dr Singh can resume work from Monday.
Dr Atul Kumar, professor in the department of Opthalmology at the Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS operated upon the PM, sources said.
Senior doctors at AIIMS explained that the Prime Minister underwent "an intraocular lens implantation after a brief surgical procedure".
The Prime Minister was in good health, said a hospital source.
Dr Manmohan Singh stayed at the hospital for one and a half hours, after the surgery and was discharged later.
The Prime Minister has been visiting the AIIMS since 2006 for eye check-ups.
