New Delhi: Stung by the vociferous agitation by the Gurjars in Rajasthan and elsewhere in the country, the Bharatiya Janata Party today defended its Vasundhara Raje-led government and, instead, blamed its rival Congress for fueling the sentiments of the community to reap political advantages from the situation.

While addressing a press conference, party vice-president Mukthar Abbas Naqvi termed the agitation as 'unfortunate' and appealed to maintain peace from every quarter. "The agitation and resultant violence is unfortunate. But Congress is only fueling the disturbed situation for the worst. The way its ministers and leaders are speaking gives a clear indication that they want to spread the movement throughout the country," he said.
BJP also slammed the ruling United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre for rejecting the proposal sent by Raje government. The state government had reportedly proposed 4 to 6 per cent of reservation for Gurjars by creating a separate category.

"Congress threw this letter in the dustbin within 2.25 minutes without giving a patient hearing. The Center is just fulfilling its political motives in place of meeting the Constitutional responsibilities," blamed Naqvi.
He said that the Chief Minister was fighting hard to have a talk with the agitating leaders and completely ruled-out her removal from the CM's post. Naqvi also informed that some Gurjar leaders from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi had met party president Rajnath Singh, who were also requested to refrain from any violent agitation over the issue.

One of the party leader, off the record, also said that the BJP had never promised for granting Scheduled Tribe status to the community and the issue do not even figure in its election manifesto.
Vasundhara Raje is also trying the sell the idea that the power of granting ST status to any community lays with the Centre. Rajasthan has forwarded the recommendations of Justice Chopra committee which was formed to find-out any amicable solution of the issue, he added.
