Renu, 24, Sonam, 20 and Payal, 17, had been requesting their father, Tejpal, to allow them to study further but he refused saying that it would not be socially acceptable to allow grown up girls to venture out of the house for education. The girls tried to convince their father but when he did not relent, the three consumed sulphas tablets kept in the house on Friday and died within an hour.

The panchayat of Choonsa village, where the incident took place, was informed and the elders of the village asked Tejpal to cremate the bodies without further delay.

The panchayat members, apparently, did not wish to call the police because the incident could have had an adverse impact on other girls in the village.
