Ex-minister Puducherry’s new L-G

New Delhi, July 18: Govind Singh Gurjar, six-time MLA and former minister of Rajasthan, was on Friday appointed as the lieutenant governor (LG) of Pudu-cherry, reports our special correspondent.

Mr Gurjar, a leading figure of the Gurjar community and a close confidant of the late Rajesh Pilot, has represented the Nasirabad Assembly constituency in Ajmer district in the Rajasthan Assembly. The 76-year-old Congress lead-er, who resigned from the House on Thursday, said "I’m looking forward to my new assignment."

DMK MPs to meet PM tomorrow

New Delhi, July 18: The DMK MPs will be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday evening to represent to him the problems being faced by the Indian fishermen, reports our special correspondent.

Union shipping minister T.R. Baalu on Friday called on external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and ha-nded over to him a copy of the DMK resolution on the plight of the Indian fishermen. Mr Mukherjee asked Mr Baalu to convey to DMK supremo M. Kar-unanidhi that the Centre is seized of the matter.

‘N-deal not for or against Muslims’

New Delhi, July 18: Samajwadi Party leaders Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh on Friday met the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, who told them that the Indo-US nuclear deal cannot be fs "for or against" the Muslims.

"The Imam said that the deal could either be anti-India or pro-India and this is for the nuclear experts to decide. It cannot be pro or anti-Muslim," sources said. The ongoing political developments were also discussedin the meeting.

Senior UP IPS officer suspended

Lucknow, July 18: The Mayawati government has suspended ADG (Rules and Manuals) Ajay Singh for violating service conduct rules, reports our special correspondent.

Mr Ajay Singh, a senior IPS officer, had given an interview two days ago in a local Hindi daily in which he levelled serious allegations against DGP Vikram Singh. Mr Singh accused his senior colleague of pandering to the whims of his political bosses. He also claimed that the DGP was inefficient and lacked control over the police force.
