Sri Lankan Navy attacks Indian fishermen

Sixty Indian fishermen were allegedly attacked by Sri Lankan navy in the Palk Straits in the wee hours on Thursday.

Police said that the fishermen, who were travelling in 15 mechanised boats, were attacked with iron bars, sickles and nylon ropes by Lankan navy personnel who also fired over 50 rounds in the air.

The Lankan Navy also destroyed GPS equipment and nets of fishermen, worth over Rs 15 lakh, police said.

The fishermen claimed they were thrown into the sea and struggled in the waters for over three hours.

One fisherman Balamurugan suffered injuries and was admitted to a hospital at Rameswaram.
