Police in search of evidence against ex-speaker

More than a dozen of people has so far been examined in connection with Assistant Marshal Gayatri Panda's allegation of sexual harassment against ex-speaker of Orissa Assembly Maheswar Mohanty, but the police is yet to get a concrete evidence against the speaker. According to a police official, in the fresh round of investigation, people living at Unit-8 where Panda resides in a flat have been questioned.

"We spoke to several people, including those who run some small business outlets there. They said that a car bearing registration number-1111 with red beacon frequently come to Panda's residence which however differs from the registration number of ex-speaker's car," said the official.

“We are now strictly going by Panda's allegations. We are aware of the former speaker's statement in the Assembly that certainly gave a conspiracy angle to this high voltage drama which finally resulted into his resignation from the chair of State Assembly speaker and Debasish Nayak being sacked as information minister of the State,” the official added.

On the other hand, even the police investigation has shown dubious past of Panda, who was suspended in September 2007 but no inquiry was set up against her by the department. This goes against the basic procedures generally followed by the government departments.

A source close to the department has this to say on her 2007 suspension, “Every suspension is followed up by a letter of charges sent to the employee. The authority then depending on the reply obtained from the employee may or may not initiate departmental inquiry. But nothing was done in Panda”s case.”
