PM assures defence services of better rewards

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured civil servants and the defence services that their grievances with the sixth Pay Commission would be addressed and they would be "properly rewarded"

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured civil servants and the defence services that their grievances with the sixth Pay Commission would be addressed and they would be "properly rewarded". Addressing civil servants at Vigyan Bhavan on the occasion of the third Civil Services Day, Singh said, "The Pay Commission has recently submitted its report and some concerns and apprehensions have been expressed by some sections of the civil services on some parts of the report."

"The Government has already set in motion a mechanism for hearing and redressing these grievances. I would like our civil and defence services to be properly rewarded," he said and added, "I also believe that the tax payers will not grudge anyone of us better remuneration as long as we are serving the best interests of our people, our country most efficiently."

Earlier this month, the Central Government approved the setting up of a 13-member committee of secretaries headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar for processing the sixth Pay Commission report. The committee will mainly function as a panel for screening the commission proposals and its final recommendations will be submitted for cabinet approval.

Both the armed forces and the Indian Police Service officers have come out against the commission's recommendations, which they say could impact the efficiency and motivation. (IANS)
